(LS) MSN: Little Blue Reading Buddies

Little Blue Elementary is our Lee’s Summit campus partner school.  One of our goals as a conference is to forge partnerships with elementary schools, and help kiddos reach reading proficiency by the third grade. Studies have shown that if students aren’t reading at grade level by third grade, they have a very low rate of success academically later in life. Our goal is to help students get passionate about reading while they’re still young, and provide a caring presence in their lives.

How can you help? We’re looking for people who would like to become reading buddies. A reading buddy wouldn’t have to be an expertly trained tutor or instructor. A reading buddy is someone willing to spend a bit of time each week reading with kiddos at Little Blue Elementary.

The ideal reading buddy is a patient individual who doesn’t mind listening to kids read. A reading buddy is a good role model, and willing to get to know the kiddos they read with. Above all, a reading buddy is a positive cheer-leader for kiddos who may need a bit of encouragement from a caring adult to succeed.

Are you able to commit to spending about half an hour each week reading with a kiddo?

(LS) MSN: Nicaragua Sponsorship

Woods Chapel Church partners with the Rainbow Network to fight poverty in rural Nicaragua.

In 2013, we met the families living in the village of Los Pinos, Nicaragua. The community did not have clean water, and most children had intestinal parasites as a result of drinking and bathing in the same creek as the animals. Children did not continue their education past 6th grade, but instead began working in the fields to earn money for their families.

We began partnering with the Rainbow Network to empower the people in Los Pinos in the areas of health care, education, economic development, and housing. We have seen change, but we hope to continue to impact lives in this community and the surrounding area.

Our annual sponsorship of $20,000 enables the Rainbow Network to continue their work. This seems like a large commitment, so to make this happen, we ask 100 families each year at Woods Chapel to make a $200 commitment. Your generosity is literally changing a community in rural Nicaragua.

Another one of the ways we strive to break the cycle of poverty is by sponsoring high school students so that they can continue their education past 6th grade. A high school sponsorship provides the supplies, uniform, and transportation needed to attend high school.

(LS) MSN: Road to Second Chances Prayer Walk

Approximately 70 million Americans have a criminal record, which hinders them from obtaining employment, education, housing, and other things necessary to live a full and productive life. No person is beyond God's reach. Just as God forgives our sins and offers us a second chance, we must offer that same grace to others.

Since 2017, Prison Fellowship has been leading the nation effort to celebrate April as Second Chance Month, the movement to unlock brighter futures for people with a criminal record. As part of Second Chance Month Woods Chapel Church is hosting a Prayer Walk for those affected by crime and incarceration. We want to show support to those who are facing challenges because of their criminal record and help unlock second chances to enable returning citizens to reach their God-given potential.

Please join us on April 6th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for a prayer walk we will begin in the coffee bar.

(LS) SG: Seekers of the Word

Sundays // 9:00 a.m. // Room 311 // Led by Glenn Sellars and Bill Carpenter

Current Study: The Books of The Minor Prophets

We are studying the "Minor Prophets” (not because they’re less important than the "Major Prophets", but because they’re shorter in length). Together, their indictments of Israel’s drift away from God set the stage for the New Covenant that will be ushered in with the birth of Jesus Christ. We will study what these ancient books meant to the people back then, what they mean to us today, and how we can apply that to our lives. It’s easy to get lost in all the “doom and gloom,” but these prophets show that God’s desire, in every situation back then and for us today, was for His people to renounce evil and return to Him. Join us anytime as we study these last 12 books of the Old Testament.

(LS) SG: Singles Adult Study

This form will register you for Jamie Brigance's group. She will follow up with you to inform you of dates and times of gatherings. Please register each individual separately.

(LS) SG: Sunday Morning Women's Study

Sundays // 9:00 a.m. // Room 312 // Led by Gina Barker and Irene Price

Current Study (December 2 - 23): Home for Christmas: Tales of Hope and Second Chances by Justin Coleman

Upcoming Study (begins December 30): Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible: Flawed Women Loved by a Flawed God by Liz Curtis Higgs

A Slightly Bad Girl is simply this: a woman unwilling to fully submit to God. We love him, serve him, and worship him, yet we find it difficult to trust him completely, to accept his plan for our lives, to rest in his sovereignty. Join us as we use Higgs’ book to explore these flawed women in Scripture, and relate them to our modern counterparts.

(LS) SG: The Call

This will be a six week study based on The Call by Adam Hamilton. It will include a video and discussion led by Lynne Schifreen and Ted Hinrichs.

Come and learn the story of the Apostle Paul, a man second only to Jesus in his influence on the Christian faith, and whose witness defines what it means to follow Jesus.

Sundays (February 24 - March 31) | 5 - 6:30 p.m.

(LS) SG: Women's Tuesday Morning Bible Study

9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Current Study: Breathe by Priscilla Shirer // A Study of the Sabbath

One of the greatest challenges among women in our culture is taking time to cease from all the activities and just breathe. We strive to complete the limitless to-do lists, hindering us from experiencing all God has for us. By neglecting time for serenity, we limit our Christlikeness and miss out on some of God's greatest gifts. In the Old Testament, Sabbath was given to the Israelites as a gift, and it is still a gift to us today. If you are weary, worn out, and exhausted, then the concept of Sabbath will change your life.

(LS) SG: Women's Wednesday Morning Bible Study

(LS) STM: College Student Spring 2019 Retreat

The Woods Chapel Church College Ministry Spring Retreat is May 17-19, 2019. It is open to all students of college age. This will be a weekend of serving in our city, growing closer to God and each other, and worship.

Our lodging for the weekend is at Saint Mary's Episcopal Church in downtown Kansas City. Saint Mary's is a beautiful, Victorian Gothic building and the oldest Episcopal church in the city. We will attend Saint Mary's Sunday morning mass for a worship experience you won't forget.

Saturday morning we will be volunteering at St Paul's Episcopal Church, serving those experiencing food insecurity. Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon we will be painting indoors at Restart's Housing Solutions Center.

There is no cost for the retreat itself. You are financially responsible for up to 2 meals out over the weekend.

The entire retreat is 48 hours (6 pm Friday through 6 pm Sunday.) By signing up, you are committing to being there the entire time.  A stronger sense of community is created and maintained if we don't have people coming and going during the weekend.

Due to accommodations at the church, registration is limited to 15 students. Signups will be taken on a first come first serve basis and a waiting list will be established if necessary.  The last day to sign up is Sunday, May 12.
